Aboagora - Between Arts and Sciences

During the Opening Ceremony of ABOAGORA 2020: Water we have the pleasure to take part in the Rome-based composer, conductor, and philosopher Enrico Minaglia's composition “Thin Ice”, which he himself performs on Finnish pitkähuilu, accompanied by Andrea Salvi on flute and bass flute.

The American writer and philosopher Ralph W. Emerson once said: “In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed”. Skating on thin ice is a good metaphor of living in today's western world. In our liquid society, life circumstances are changing so rapidly that the individuals cannot adapt to them, and everything becomes precarious: work, love, knowledge, values, identity. They know only one survival strategy: to keep running as fast as they can.

At the beginning, the Finnish pitkähuilu plays a slow melody, in a circular form, surrounded by quiet sounds of solid, healthy ice: it is a distant echo of the pre-industrial world. Little by little, the world starts to change, the ice starts to melt: all those bubbling/creaking/crackling sounds scare the skater/flutist, and force him to run for his life, faster and faster.

Aboagora - Between Arts and Sciences

The interactive workshop “The Sea: A Living Lab” at ABOAGORA 2020: Water explores human interaction with the sea, as well as the vast amount of goods and services the sea provides for. During the workshop, the audience will co-create a maritime Lego landscape as a basis for discussion, and experiment with scenarios of environmental and/or societal change!

“The Sea” is an interdisciplinary research profile at Åbo Akademi University in collaboration with Sea and Maritime Studies at University of Turku.

Nina Tynkkynen is Associate Professor in Public Administration under the research profile The Sea at Åbo Akademi University. Her research interests include politics and environmental policy, in particular the marine environmental governance.

Magnus Hellström is Associate Professor in Industrial Management at Åbo Akademi University, and The Sea. His research interests revolve around business models of smart and sustainable technologies in marine- and maritime-related areas.

Aboagora - Between Arts and Sciences

Encountering algal bloom whilst enjoying your summer day at the beach or on the seaside is very unpleasant. During the last weeks, the occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria has increased in Finnish sea areas and lakes. The cyanobacteria blooms typically flourish in late July and early August. Cyanobacteria have been observed in both Finnish sea areas and lakes. In the sea areas, cyanobacteria are mostly mixed in the water due to strong winds. In the coastal areas, cyanobacteria have been observed mostly in the Gulf of Finland, the Archipelago Sea and the Bothnian Sea.

How do you spot cyanobacteria? A smaller amount of the bacteria in the water appears as green or yellowish particles. If the algae dissolve into tiny particles in the water when you touch it with a stick, it may be cyanobacteria. In a glass of water the bacteria will rise to the surface as tiny greenish particles within an hour. When the weather is calm, a substantial amount of cyanobacteria forms algal rafts and piles up in coastal water.

If you would like to help out and report your algal bloom observations from beaches, lakes, and coastal areas, you are very welcome to do so at the website jarviwiki.fi, maintained by the Finnish Environment Institute, or through the Havaintolähetti -application, where users can e.g. share photos and other observations. Individual observations support the national algal situation assessment, and the reports are shown on the national algal situation map!

The construction of hydroelectric water plants and The construction of hydroelectric water plants and dams with the ability to generate power through running water presents a myriad of challenges. Even though hydroelectric power plants provide many advantages for the end user, they are controversial, and it is of huge importance to weigh the pros and cons of this form of energy when planning to construct one. Since the mid 1900's, e.g. Sámi activists and eco-activists in the northern countries have protested against the damming of rivers in the traditional area of the Sámis called Sápmi. People living along the river area are often moved out by force so that the construction of the dams can proceed. Communities living downstream are vulnerable to flooding, should strong water currents be released from the dam – yet one of the main downsides to hydroelectric power plants is the risk of local droughts. Another significant impact of the dam is the transformation upstream from a free-flowing river ecosystem to an artificial slack-water reservoir habitat. Interruptions of natural water flow can have a great impact on the river ecosystem and the environment: various fish and other aquatic species normally migrate when there is food shortage or when the breeding season begins, but the dam wall blocks migratory fish passage. Large dams have led to the extinction of fish and aquatic species, the disappearance of birds in floodplains, losses of forest, wetland and farmland, and erosion of coastal deltas. What is more, the livelihood of people living in the area might be destroyed, if the community e.g. is dependent upon fishing for livelihood. And even though the hydroelectric plants emit fewer greenhouse gasses than e.g. fossil fuels, the hydroelectric power reservoir emits substantial amounts of carbon dioxide and methane. . .
